Austin Couch is a second-year B.Arch student at Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. Inspired by the emphasis on material circularity in his second semester design studio, Material+, he is interested in the role that materials play in sustainable design, specifically towards the progression to a circular economy. For the Circular Construction Lab, Austin is a research assistant developing a database of materials used within construction, aiming at creating circularity indicators for these materials. In addition to CCL, Austin is a designer for Cornell University Sustainable Design’s Sustainable Education project team. He is working on obtaining Living Building Challenge certification for a speculative dormitory that the team designed in rural Nepal. Austin hopes to utilize new research and technology to integrate sustainability within the field of architecture and design.
